Dual CS43198 DACs
The Fiio JM21 has two dedicated high-end DACs, Cirrus Logic CS43198 and SGM8262 amplification. This effectively reduces crosstalk and enables higher quality and purer sound.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 chipset
The Fiio JM21 is equipped with an 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 (6nm process). The new 680 processor used in the media player offers higher CPU performance with lower power consumption and less heat generation.

3.5 mm + 4.4 mm headphone outputs
The Fiio JM21 has been upgraded to the more common balanced 4.4 mm headphone jack, which provides more reliable and durable connections. It also features a 3.5 mm headphone jack with a single-sided plug, making it compatible with the various headphones you already own. Not only does the JM21 support two headphone outputs, but it also offers a maximum output power of up to 700 mW, making it compatible with a wide range of headphones.
Compact and lightweight design
The power-saving features of the 680 processor allow for a thinner and lighter product, which greatly improves portability. Combined with two power-efficient Cirrus Logic CS43198 DAC chips, the JM21 achieves a stable battery life of over 9 hours (9.5 hours in balanced mode, 12.5 hours in single-ended mode) even with a 3100mAh battery.
The JM21 features a two-tone frame design with an aluminum alloy middle frame and a plastic back cover. This design makes the product appear sleeker. The aluminum alloy middle frame provides sturdy support and protection for the display. The plastic back cover was chosen for its light weight and also serves as a battery compartment. The rear cover has a beveled surface for a better grip.
Entry-level price, premium configuration
The 680 processor is considered a lower-end configuration compared to FIIO's mid- to high-end products (and even the broader music player industry). In this case, it is a low-end device equipped with a high-end processor.
Two CS43198 DAC chips are standard configurations for mid-range portable audio products. Some users may compare them to portable USB dongles and assume that their sound quality is similar. However, the two are fundamentally different. One very important point is that music players have a built-in battery, whose energy source and flexibility is much higher than USB dongles, which draw their power from smartphones.
This is one reason why the JM21 can deliver up to 700 mW of output power. Another point is the digital audio signal path. The player uses the main control chip and FPGA for jitter reduction prior to DAC conversion, ensuring a direct signal path with high correlation to the quality of the source. In contrast, portable USB dongles rely on USB transmission from the phone via a cable for decoding and amplification, which introduces additional factors that can affect the audio signal.
Various connections and functions
The 3.5 mm and 4.4 mm headphone outputs also serve as line-out (LO) outputs to which you can connect external amplifiers or active speakers. As for digital outputs, the JM21 supports a coaxial and a digital USB audio output, providing a digital audio source for connection to higher-quality decoders. For the coaxial output, you should use a 3.5 mm to RCA adapter, with a maximum sampling rate of 384 kHz or DSD128.
The USB output supports up to 768 kHz or DSD512 in the exclusive USB audio mode in the FiiO Music app.
Internally, the JM21 is equipped with two custom-made femtosecond oscillators that ensure sufficient quality for digital transport. These features make the JM21 a versatile device that can serve multiple purposes and meet different user needs.
